Before you go

• Bali, Java and Lombok have solid coverage in the tourist areas. Once you're inland in Sumatra, Sulawesi or the eastern islands it gets patchy fast, and on the smaller Gilis it can drop to nothing.
• Indonesia is enormous and spans three time zones. A domestic flight can easily put you somewhere with a fraction of the coverage you had that morning.
• Data is cheap here and gets used quickly. Ride-hailing apps, which you'll use constantly in Bali and Jakarta, run maps continuously in the background.
• These are data-only plans. They don't come with a local phone number, and they don't carry calls or texts, so keep your normal SIM switched on for those and let the eSIM handle data.
• The plan starts when it first connects to a network at your destination, not when you buy it. Buy it weeks ahead if you like; the clock starts when you land.
• Install it before you fly, over your home Wi-Fi. Installing needs an internet connection, which is the one thing you won't have at the airport.
• Don't delete an eSIM to make room for another one. An activation code only works once, and your phone can hold several profiles side by side.

Yes. An Indonesia plan covers the whole country, islands included. Coverage quality varies by island; the plan doesn't.

Can I use Gojek and Grab with a data-only eSIM?

Yes, once your account is already set up. Both apps verify new accounts by SMS to a phone number, so create the account before you travel while your normal SIM can still receive the code.

How much data for two weeks in Bali?

10 GB is a sensible allowance, as ride-hailing and maps use more than people expect. 5 GB works if you're mostly in one place.
