Before you go
- Mexico City, Cancún, the Riviera Maya, Guadalajara and Monterrey all have solid coverage. Rural Chiapas, Oaxaca's mountains and the Baja interior are much thinner.
- The Yucatán's cenotes and the deeper Maya ruins sit well away from cell sites. Download the maps before you drive out.
- Distances between the main tourist regions are long. Mexico City to Cancún is a flight, not a drive.
- These are data-only plans. They don't come with a local phone number, and they don't carry calls or texts, so keep your normal SIM switched on for those and let the eSIM handle data.
- The plan starts when it first connects to a network at your destination, not when you buy it. Buy it weeks ahead if you like; the clock starts when you land.
- Install it before you fly, over your home Wi-Fi. Installing needs an internet connection, which is the one thing you won't have at the airport.
- Don't delete an eSIM to make room for another one. An activation code only works once, and your phone can hold several profiles side by side.

Mexico eSIM questions
- Does a Mexico plan cover the United States?
- No. A North America regional plan covers both if you're crossing the border.
- Will it work in Tulum and the cenotes?
- In the towns and along the coast road, yes. At the more remote cenotes and ruins, expect to lose signal.
- How much data for ten days?
- 10 GB is comfortable for ten days with daily map use.
